How to get a good nights sleep

Posted on May 21, 2010 by yummymummy No Comment

There is no more important time to get lots of rest and sleep than when you are pregnant, yet there is also no more difficult time to achieve this. As your bump grows it becomes more and more difficult to find a position that is comfortable for both you and the baby and restless nights of tossing and turning really don’t make for a happy mum, or in fact partner sleeping with them!

The current thinking is that it is not healthy for a pregnant person to lay flat on her back whilst sleeping as this may decrease the flow of blood through the umbilical cord, you therefore need to either be on your side or slightly elevated, both of which can prove very uncomfortable if you are used to lying on your back.

However, the answer is simple – the maternity pillow. Get a good maternity pillow and it will mould to you, whether you need something to support your bump, something to support your back, or something to stop you rolling on your back, you can even get a full nights sleep sat upright if you like, believe me, I’ve done it!

And you don’t stop using your pillow when the baby is born. In fact, in my house, our maternity pillow ended up having it’s own name – ‘fishy pillow’ (due to the design before you ask) and continues to be used today even though my youngest child is now four!

If you can get a fully moldable pillow with washable covers, such as the Theraline Nursing Pillow from John Lewis, you will have a friend for life! Thanks to its beanbag filling, it can mould to any and every shape you could possibly need. It is therefore the most versatile nursing pillow, it is a booster for your child so that they can lie at exactly the right angle for them, so that they can be bottle fed or just have a rest after feeding, but it can also mould into a doughnut shape so that when your baby is learning to roll or sit up, there is always a soft cushion surrounding them. And a sick child loves nothing better than having their favourite pillow surround them when they are feeling under the weather!

Our maternity pillow was there to help me sleep, it was there when I gave birth to all my children, it was a nursing pillow, a support for my twins so that I could feed them at the same time, it enabled my babies to be supported and protected when they were learning to sit up and it is now the only pillow that is asked for during times of illness.

When you consider buying a maternity pillow you may question whether you will really use it (my husband certainly did) but boy does he eat his words!
